To be honest I think the most simplest way to resolve this is to install the latest trunk version of the module. I was having some issues with my forum a few days ago regarding the Reply box not appearing, Willr sent me the following link to download & install which sorted out all the problems I was having & it probably only took 20 minutes to do...

P.S. Be sure to only upload the forum folder which is inside the Branches folder of the zip file. You'll see what I mean when you download it.
P.P.S. Don't forget to delete all of your current forum pages in the admin section, uninstall your existing Forum Module & run a dev/build before installing the new module.

Thank you for your further replay. I tried the different version of SS Forum however this hasn't made a difference. I've put this error down to the hosting company I was using (Go Daddy). I was unable to install SS simply by uploading the SS directory due to a mod rewrite issue, the only way to get SS to "work" was to use the auto install module.
After trying over and over again the forum module wouldn't work and allow topics to be added.
I set up a basic account with Pipe Ten and manages to install SS and the Forum Module without any issues.
