Hi Silverstripers

I have developed a new hosting/cms platform using Silverstripe and Amazon S3 to enable anyone to instantly create and host a Silverstripe website. The service is called Silversites.

Currently I have released only the core features but I have lots more planned. Before I go ahead and develop all of these features I need to get some feedback from the community and potential users.

Hi,

Sorry for not replying to your question sooner. I did take a look at the website you refer to but unfortunately I only speak about six words of Italien, and I don't know about the other moderators/members of these forums nor the SilverStripe core developers.

So It's not really clear, at least to me, what data you wish to collect and how, what the Web Framework Point stands for and how or if it would benefit SilverStripe or otherwise be of interest to its developers/users now or in the long run. Maybe you could elaborate a bit more?

We are Erika Corona and Daniele Grechi, research fellows at the DIEE of Cagliari and at the DITEN of Genoa.
We would like to know if it is possible to create a post on your forum about a university project, which has the objective of collecting web projects data made with your web CMF framework.
We propose to the developers, actively involved in your forum, the use of an interactive tool we are testing: Web Framework Points (beta).

I have a related issue. I was able to get Uplodify working with executable files but they won't show up in the CMS folders. That makes linking to them a little difficult for some of my users. Is there a way that SS will show .exe and .msi files in the file tree?

I'm with you in case of security implementations.
When checking /Security/... links you can identify SS sites often how the forms are generated, I was meaning that.

I don't think /Security/ links are a reliable indicator of a SS-based website because any other framework could be using the same URL segments.

You can remove the generator meta tag if you like, I believe it's overridden in _config.php. Do a search for it on this forum - there's a thread of mine about it that got an answer from Willr.

I don't think revealing which CMS you're using is a problem. Many hugely popular sites are known to run on Wordpress and it's not a security issue. Sure, any hacker could go check out the source code and look for vulnerabilities, but it all really comes down to how well you've locked down your server and implemented security measures in your application.

I think they should check som /Security/* links

It's good practice to hide the used CMS.

There is a meta tag in the head part of your website's source code that identifies SS.

If you have a website profiler installed, you can pull a lot of useful information about what a website's running on. See the attached screenshot of a profiler I ran on my client's site in Chrome. It can be pretty interesting going around looking into what others are using. =D

I understand that new submissions to the showcase first must be verified ...
I sent in 2 URLs but only 1 was accepted. Both are SS sites.

How do you check if a site is made with SS?

What Sphere says is very accurate - but I understand that this is very strange - if you have an assignment I am guessing that create a database means creates a database with tables and data in SQL.

Silverstripe is the first time that I've not had to use SQL to create a basic database structure and manage the data (although within my code there is direct SQL).

You know how to write PHP don't you?
You do know how to set up a new database in phpmyadmin?

That's all you need to know. Silverstripe won't create the database for you. Just add the connection details to _config.php in your project (mysite) folder and you should be done setting up.

After changes to objects, models, extensions or decorators etc, run {url here}/dev/build?flush=all

I am confused how to create a database in SilverStripe. I got an assignment to build web database applications. On the web there are laws and regulations. In the Admin there are functions on the user uploaded and there are functions to download and view pdf documents. I'm confused early work in SilverStripe. Please help.

Something I have been wishing the Community Showcase had was some sort of filtering.

Some way to find all my listings in the Showcase...like making them linked somehow from either my profile or DN pages. they have them linked, but they link to the actual website...which is good, but i would like to find them IN the Showcase without having to go through every page until i find it.

I have a problem, i worked local and created a dropdown with values of the products that was added in the cms.
In the local database, it saves the data to the database, but on my online version, it does not.

It would be the folder dataobject_manager in your site root.

And no, the class you'd have to extend or edit is in dataobject_manager/code/flv/FLV.php

You can, you just have to modify the commands passed to ffmpeg or flvtools in the DOM. Alternatively, you could just accept AVI files as a straight file upload.

I've built several video uploaders. You will need to write some custom code using DataObjectManager and Uploadify, and if you want to perform encoding on the video files, you'll need ffmpeg and flvtools installed.

Everybody has their own way of handling video files, and there isn't any universal video uploader module out there yet.

Hmmm... maybe I should write one!

If the image has been resized (you can see from the path in the outputted image tag) then it could be SS could not generate a thumbnail for it. Check the permissions on the assets folder. You should have read / write access for the web server.

Pictures Don't Show?

For some reason when I upload a picture, and place it into the stage area of a page, it doesn't show up. There is a blank outlined box with a picture of a small coffee cup in the upper left hand corner. The picture uploaded fine, but why isn't it visible to the page stage?

I already have Silverstripe installed, and I then tried to install Ecommerce. I followed the directions that you sent to me as a link, and for some reason Ecommerce changed my website. The home page is all white with text indicating fatal error. I then got rid of ecommerce from my site directory, and now my website homepage is fine, but I saved a copy of Ecommerce in hopes of installing it correctly. I guess I do need help installing ecommerce. The link you sent helps, but for some reason the directions didn't work for me.

Could you be more specific about ecommerce? if you are talking about the ecommerce module then you need SilverStripe installed before the module. If you want to use SilverStripe with your existing ecommerce system (perhaps not the silverstripe module) that is a bit tricker.
