It has been quite quiet over christmas, and it is definetly more quiet that just before/just after I became a mod.
I'd say around one spammer every few days at the moment.

Yeah the three identical links are dodgy, although he's got a valid question so I think thats acceptable in small doses. If in doubt, I'd rather have the odd spam than piss off new members who might not have contributed anything yet, but still have the potential to become long-term contributors. Inclusive rather than exclusive

We're not planning any new spam combat measures at the moment, unless there's an urgent need - how much moderation do you guys have to do? (posts/day). Looking at the signup data, we're more or less back to normal (~5/day rather than ~250/day in our worst times).

Also what about footers? Someone just editted their posts, not to thank anyone or provide more information, to link three times each post to their business website. It is frustrating to have no contribution, but an obviously "linking" stragaery.

Also I see some new accounts post nothing but useless replies, like 'I totally agree with anything you say' or 'I like your answer' and other nonsense...

This way old posts move to the front without any reason whatsoever. Would it be ok to just delete these posts?

I've noticed that many account simply sign up with a link to thier website and contribute nothing. They surely do not need an account and are only doing so to get a link on their profile (whatever that is worth) - I hope that planned measures will reduce this.

Backlog of new modules approved

Hello everybody,

I've just approved requests for new modules, unfortunately some requests as old as August 2011.
I'd like to apologise for our lack of commitment to approving new modules in the last months.
In our defence, there was a nasty bug stopping the approval, and it took me over two hours to track down.
Turns out its not a good idea to mark 25k forum members in your approver group and create a DataObjectSet from them...

So again, sorry it took so long - and please check out the new modules, there's some awesome work in there!

That was indeed an oversight, sorry about that!
We probably won't bundle the module with new major releases any longer, but should've spelled this out explicitly in the upgrading guides.

The 2.4.6 upgrade notes state the following:

- With these folders: cms, sapphire, googlesitemaps
- Delete your existing folders

The download package doesn't contain the googlesitemaps module. Is this missing or has it been integrated elsewhere in the sapphire or cms folders?

Having no idea where to put questions like this, i will just try here

Are there any plans to improve on the Has Many dataobject manager?

For all of my sites, i end up having a DO called PageImages, and everytime i get a bit annoyed when i want to add more than just one image - it takes to long. First click add, in pop up enter a name, save, click on name to go back to record, then selecting a picture and click save, close pop-up and go again...

I now there is the DOM module from Uncle Cheese, i just dont like that it changes the CMS and (atleast last time i tried) it does not work in multilanguage sites.

Something like adding multiple images / dataobjects in the CMS should be easy and fast - it's something that is done alle the time. Also sorting should be integrated IMHO.

Can't wait to try out the first release of SS 3 :o) Keep up the good work guys!

We're actually planning something similar to that, but a bit more automated based on stopforumspam.com data. Asking for a brief introduction means we need to manually vet applications (as spam bots will just automatically fill out most fields) - which is precisely what we want to avoid ;)

I still see a lot of "new members" in the forum with nicknames like:howxw8xtoconcka. In the beginning most were from "Afghanistan" (= the first country in the drop-down list! - another burden on the shoulders of the poor Afghan people!!); now they come from other countries too. I don't believe the're "real people".
Wouldn't it be better to create a more strict procedure for new members? For instance: ask new members to drop a few lines in a special "introduce yourself" forum, and if they don't, delete their account in let's say two hours or so?

Hello everybody,

In the last couple of weeks, we've become aware of a significant spam account problem on silverstripe.org.
We've had three times the amount of registrations that we had in the first four years of the website.
I would really like to say this is a side effect of us taking over the CMS world, but it looks more like spam.

In order to counter-act spam by existing accounts, we've had to resort to quite drastic measures,
and suspend about half of the registered accounts indefinetly. This was performed by a few
criteria, most importantly not a single post on the forum - so no active members should be impacted by these measures.

The remaining accounts might either be "lurkers", or spam - we've tried to be smart on other criteria,
but can't exclude the possibility of "false posities" (suspended real accounts). If your account is suspended,
you'll see a red warning message when visiting the forum or your profile. Please contact support at silverstripe dot com
to reactivate your account, with a line or two to prove that you're ... human!

A "community-voted" spam marking would be awesome, but as Will said - prone to abuse. The forum codebase is open source - pull requests with well thought-out solutions welcome

We've had five members raising their hand and fulfilling the criteria, which is awesome! I think this should give us a good coverage for now, and we just see how we go. Depending how much of a burden the shared moderation is to individuals, we might ask for more volunteers

Moderators do get a mark as spam - but this also removes the user account completely. I see the point of having a mark this as spam, perhaps that itself could get spammed though? We would need to limit the use of the spam button as to not spam the moderators!

Hello everybody!

In the light of a recent spike in spam signups and posts on this forum, we're looking to widen our circle of moderators to deal with the traffic. Its as simple as monitoring the RSS feed frequently, and clicking "mark as spam" on a post/thread.

It's also a great responsibility to keep with our open community spirit (<Yoda quote here>).
Lacking distinct community guidelines, I'd like to point you to a great online book resource for this:
The "Communication" chapter of "Producing Open Source Software" (http://producingoss.com/en/communications.html).
To be clear, we're trying to get rid of spam, not members you might not agree with (or that behave unprofessionally).

So: If you've been around here for a while (at least three months), have been an active community member (at least 150 posts), we'd really like your help in keeping this forum a high quality resource.

Please apply for moderation with me (ingo at silverstripe dot com), and briefly outline why you're a good fit for the job. Also let us know if you want to cover all forums, or just a specific subset. We're particularly keen on people outside of the NZ timezone, as we've got a reasonable moderator coverage with core members there.

If you've submitted a job you should always get an email (https://github.com/willrossi/silverstripe-jobboard/blob/master/code/JobHolder.php#L124), it just won't include your password (as we only store it hashed). If you need to retrieve your password, use the lost password form.

We're not exactly asking for bug reports just yet as this is an alpha and quite a lot of functionality is still missing / only roughly implemented (but bugfix patches welcome). When we get nearer the beta releases bug reports would be the emphasis. As for general thoughts on it, I would read the threads on SS3.0 on the dev mailing list first, see if we're discussed your point and if not then raise it on that.
