On a related note, if someone comes to the site via an old google listing (old site used index.php/..) then all pages visited after the inital 'page not found' page still have the index.php in the address. Can that be changed?

Hi,
This may be something obvious but I've searched through the forum and google and can't find a solution.

I have installed Silverstripe as a replacement CMS and have added silverstripe-linkmapping to handle the old links that have been indexed in google. I can access the linkmapping admin page and add the urls to map but it still defaults to the 'page not found'.

Silverstripe version 2.4.5

Is there any extra config / setup that needs to be in place for it to work? The htaccess file is the default from the install.

Integrate SilverStripe User Classes into Existing App

Merging existing phpBB with SilverStripe - single authentication

Hi - for an upcoming project I'll be integrating a phpBB forum with SilverStripe.

I want to have a single authentication for both sites and wondered if anyone had any suggestions for going about doing this?

A few questions I have been considering:

Would it be better to use the phpBB members table and link this to SS or vice versa?
What authentication methods would you recommend?

One of the key points you need to consider is the content model. WordPress and SilverStripe have pretty different content models where WP pretty much splits everything into Posts and Pages. If your site is mostly page based then making the switch shouldn't be all that difficult.

The main thing to consider in that case is how you're using custom fields today. SilverStripe doesn't have the notion of custom fields at all but instead works with different page types. Each page type can have different fields and a different template from all the rest. So if you're using custom fields extensively you need to go through your site and note those down and then create them as page types in SilverStripe.

After you've done this you should be able to write an import script that takes the xml file you get from the WordPress exporter and imports it to SilverStripe. I'm not sure about the limitations of the exporter when it comes to custom fields so you might run into issues there.

If your WordPress site is mostly post based then a switch will be harder. SilverStripe doesn't really have the notion of non hierarchical posts like WordPress does. DataObjects don't have a hierarchy but they're really not meant to be displayed in the same way pages are. There is a blog module that you can use but converting posts over to SilverStripes blog module would likely take some work.

One other key point is that working with SilverStripe means writing PHP code, at least initially. Every content type in SilverStripe is a class so you have to get your fingers dirty. For simpler WordPress sites you can sometimes get away with writing very little PHP code if any but in SilverStripe you're going to have to write some. That said, SilverStripe is very powerful and once you get used to the workflow you can often do pretty big changes to the content model alot quicker than you can in WordPress.

Hi,

Im new to SilverStripe having been referred here by an industry colleague who recommended a change of platform. I have an existing Wordpress business website (Textile Industry) which i would like to transition to SS. In the past i would have outsourced any website work but after a couple of extremely dissapointing events recently i now want to take charge of all these matters in-house. My query revolves around the technical aspects of proposed transition.

What are some of the main key points i need to consider to effect the swap over?

Thanks alot for the post, i followed your steps and i have manged to transfer the whole website to my new laptop. i did had some problem in the begning i was not droping the new DB already in new installation as it had the same name as my old DB but i managed it finally.

1. Backup your database to a sql file.
2. Copy your ss root folder to your new laptop. Make sure the permissions on the files are the same as before.
3. Create a new database on your new laptop and import the backed-up sql file.
4. Edit your _config.php to connect to the new database.
5. Run dev/build to make sure it works and is up to date.

That should be all!

Moving Silverstripe CMS to New PC

I started website development after long long time so was not sure which CMS to start working with after doing a thorough search i decided to choose Silverstripe. Its been almost a month since i have been using Silverstripe CMS and i am loving it already.

I will like to thank all the people associated with silverstripe developer community infect every single person who has put some input in this forum in answering all the qurries and giving value support to new and old users.

personally it has been great help i started with basic tutorial and now i have been able to create JScript qurries and add them to my website just by reading and guidence on tutorial and these forums. Many time during last month i get stupid error but by justing coming on this forum i was able to find the solutions without even publishing new Topic , which is great time saver.

before i get carried away my simple question is i almost finshed with my first website on SS it is running great luckily i have bought my new laptop yestreday and will like to transfer all my work from my old Laptop to new one as i am about to sell this laptop.

can any one please suggest if i install WAMP and SS on My new laptop and copy all the files from directory WWW of this laptop to new laptos WWW directory will this bring in all the pages and work i have done or i will have to make some changes to system settings, mysql , ?

i have more then 25pages in my first website so if this will work it will save me alot of time any suggestion or if there is any other way to do this task please comments .

Rewrite URL For Old Images

Hi all,

We've moved (most) of our site from WP to SS.

Just got an issue with referencing the old images. We've got all our images using absolute source references to the old WP image directory.

the old path to an image was:

http://www.mymoneycalculator.com.au/guides/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/dividend-dates.png

now the new path is:

http://www.mymoneycalculator.com.au/Images/dividend-dates.png

When I try and use a RewriteRule in the .htaccess file i get shown this message in firefox:

"The action 'wp_content' does not exist in class Hub_Controller"

I'm very new to SS so I have no idea what that means.

Any help would be very much appreciated.

I fixed it by putting some ReWrite Rules after the ReWrite Base command and before the SS commands e.g.

What I'd done is FTP's the images (in folders) into the Assets folder, and added the image links to the files database

however, I didn't realize that I had to also add database entries for each directory I'd uploaded, and define each directories parent directory too. once I did this, all my images were found...

Problem solved. Stay away from the .htaccess file and install the Link Mapping Module available here:

http://silverstripe.org/link-mapping-module/

Installs a 'Link Mapping' tab to the CMS allowing old url addresses to be redirected to new pages on your site. Happy days.

I've had some issues when uploading files through the FTP as well. If the dataobjects are currently referencing the correct files check the permissions on the directories. My FTP user account uploads files with 000 permission. I've gone so far as to manually create the _resampled folder in my subfolders and ensure permission is 766 or 777 on both the resampled and its parent folder.

On a linux system it comes down to the permission groups your FTP user and Silverstripe are running in.

But like I said first ensure your DataObjects are referencing the correct files

I'm currently having problems implementing 301 page redirects on the htaccess file associated with a Silverstripe 2.4.5 install. I've rebuilt a client's old asp based website in Silverstripe and the site has a number of old page references on the search indexes.

The current htaccess file has the following in place:

I've looked at a few forum posts on htaccess files and 301 redirect problems and tried placing the following RewriteCond on the Silverstripe htaccess file:

Placing the above code at the end of the RewriteRule produced no redirect result on the public page, just a 404 page error ie

FTP'd Images

Hi,

On my old site, I had a few hundred user uploaded images. I've FTP's these to the new silerstripe site, and manually added the links in to the 'Files' table in the database, and another dataobject table which links the photos to a gallery

This works fine if the image is in the main /assets/Uploads/ folder, but the problem is all my old galleries were in individual folders,
/assets/Uploads/OldImages/gallery/284

basically it seems silverstripe just isn't creating the resampled images that are in the folders?

How would I set it up so silverstripe knows to look through teh sub folders to find the images?

I can say definitively that an Import of Wordpress Blog content using a WordpressPostContentSource connector with all the latest from github:

External Content Module 0.2.7
Blog Module 0.4.1
Word Press Connector Module 0.1-beta1
Queued Jobs Module 1.2.3

Does not work. You get a message saying the import is starting and then nothing happens after that and nothing is imported, even if you kick the task off using http://path.to.silverstripe/dev/tasks/ProcessJobQueueTask.

Any guidance on this would be greatly appreciated. I have too many posts to do manually.

bugfix: migrating members with hashed but unsalted passwords

Hi team,

While migrating users from a foreign system into the Member table, a bug surfaced in the way password hashes are handled.

It seems Security::encrypt_password() doesn't differentiate between:

1. plaintext passwords needing hashing for the first time (`Salt` is NULL)
2. hashed but unsalted passwords (`Salt` is empty string '')

This can be fixed in:
sapphire/security/Security.php#842

by changing:
$salt = ($salt) ? $salt : $e->salt($password);

to:
$salt = isset ($salt) ? $salt : $e->salt($password);

I'm sure that there is probably a better way, but you could just save the spreadsheet as a pdf then open it in Photoshop or a similar program and save as a jpg file.

Embed? What I would really like to do is save an Excel spreadsheet as an image, which I don't think can be done, and then just display that image on one of my pages.

So I have this Excel spreadsheet with all of these results and I can't place it seamlessly into a SilverStripe page.

Kinda - open ended... for you mean provide a this as the means for editing dataobjects all at once in a spreasheet like view? using excel spreadtsheets as the database? using a spreadsheet functionality like formulas, graphs and pivot tables?

I am curious as I'm making a spreadsheet view at the moment that may well become a module...

There is inconstancy in the import part, I am trying to import again with same setup its not working. In the previous attempt importing comments failed but content was imported.

Also there are two external content module on GitHub

The thing i mostly do from local to hoster is...

First i install and make a site complete working local with all the extra's i want.

then i backup the db on my local machine.

install a clean ss in the hoster (i prefer normally the same ss version as installed on the local machine, but a newer version is normally no problem).
After installation i download the mysite/_config.php and modify it with my extra's, upload it again and overwrite.

Then upload with ftp (filezilla):
upload my template and other modifications (exept my _config.php wich i allready modified)
Upload the modules
then upload the folder assets with all the images and files
then i set (so i'm sure) the assets folder to chmod 755 (or 777 for some servers) and all files included

Then i import the exported (local) db via phpMyAdmin

run an dev/build?flush=1

and (most of the time) it all works and have moved the site from local to hoster.

If i just need to import lots of images i upload them with filezilla ftp and in files and images i check for new files and wait a while till the list gives me a notice ... files added and ... files removed.

Thank Willr,

I did contact Andrew and he was kind enough to look into the problem. Well according to him the the default Wordpress XML-RPC API does not allow to fetch any sub-set of posts hence we can't get limited number of post at a time. He adviced increasing the memory for PHP to few GB but again no luck.

However as a work around I deleted my post and brought it down to 600 post. Now atleast these post show up in External Content >> WordpressPostSource. But again the actual import fails. I tried queuing it and got an error, I have attached the file.

Hey

Not sure if you have this issue still but I'm sure there are a few others, like me who struggled with this at first.

I've found the easiest way is to install a fresh copy of SS on the remote server by:

• Download the files from silverstripe.org
• Unzip and upload to your staging server using an FTP application
• Create a database on the remote server and do an install
• Confirm the site works
• Upload your mysite directory and any modules assets etc to the remote site
• Upload your database that you've created during development
• Run a /dev/build and you should be done

You can always just edit the .htaccess file after you've uploaded you development source files and database though if you're comfortable with that.

You might want to get in touch with Andrew who developed the Wordpress Connector and see if he has had any experience with that many pages. It's a relatively new module so may not have been tried on a site that big.

Wordpress to SS with 2500+ post

Have been struggling to migrate posts from Wordpress to SilverStripe for last few days.
I have a WordPress blog with 2500+ posts & need to port it with images.

Some of the tools available are not optimized to handle big site. Wordpress connector for example shows the post list only when I delete my post & bring it to 500 posts.

XML importer tool again has its own set of errors.
Can somebody suggest something that is simple & can handle 2500+ posts?

Moving file from local server to distant server?

Hi, new to SS but not to websites. I did most of my sites with Adobe Dw and a used to move files from local to distant via FTP. I am a little puzzled about how do to this with SS.

How do i move files from SS lcoal server location *htdocs/mysite* to a distant server?

Via FTP from within SS?
Via FTP a program like Fetch or any FTP program?
What files to move?

Any help/toturial/ressources appreciated.

I think the easiest (and most performant) would be Redirect rules in your .htaccess (mod_rewrite), which is not application specific. You should be able to generate a list of old URLs with a SQL query.

If you want to get into SilverStripe routing, here's a couple of pointers to get you started:

in mysite/_config.php

Director::add_rules(99, array(
'2010/$Month/$Day/$Slug' => 'MyController',
'2009/$Month/$Day/$Slug' => 'MyController',
// ...
) ;

Unfortunately SilverStripe routing doesn't support regexes, so you'll have to hardcode all years in there.

in mysite/code/MyController.php

class MyController {
function handleAction($request) {
// $request->param('Month') etc. can be used for querying
// ...
}
}

You could also look into decorating ErrorPage with alternateFilepathForErrorcode() (which in your case would be the new URL rather than the file path). Problem is that you can't overrie the HTTP status code 404, even when the page content is served - not good for SEO.

BTW: There's a recipe about handling legacy URLs in the SilverStripe book

Just so others know, this worked on my test box when I was testing migration of my site from WP to SS. There was an error or two but I contacted the owner of the WP importer and he worked with me to get through them.

I gave him the errors I saw in my web logs.

So maybe get the information over and maybe he will see a solutions.

From an SEO stand point I would be better off importing over the /blogarchives on wordpress option?
