I have a website that runs silverstripe cms, on one host currently. But now i want to transfer the domain and the website to another host. How do i transfer the website including the cms to the new host? Alternatively how do i download the website files from the cms? Because if i have to download the .php files from the server directly, they will be converted to .html automatically by the server..

Let me know soon.

Thanks

I've used this before on a 2.4x site when I have migrated from a messy hand-coded site, although you will have to probably automate the database conversion. I assume that it works on 3 now: https://github.com/ajshort/silverstripe-linkmapping

Using SS3.0
I have an existing hand coded site with some 800 pages and a url structure which is a mess!

I have migrated the pages over to SS (thanks for previous help) and improved the structure.

Obviously I want the old URL's to translate into the new URL's (each page has a field (OldURL) to store this).

It would seem madness to create a massive .htaccess file to manage these translation and I cannot seem to find a way to do it with SS which is bound to mean I have missed something.

All help gratefully received

Mike

thanks for this and makes sense. is there any clever way of having a page which is nested 2 others (for example page tourx sites /under big tours and nice tours) but rather than the url being xxx.com/bigtours/nicetours/tourx it displays as xxx.com/bigtours/tourx?

thanks
neil

By the sounds of it your existing urls are a little over the place (.html some nested). I would recommend for your new site setup the structure as you want from scratch then add 301 redirects to your .htaccess file to redirect old urls to the new ones. No idea what size site you have but 30-40 pages shouldn't take that long by hand, if you're scripting the process of importing pages (via an api) then you could also script the generation of the redirects.

Make sure you include the google sitemap module and submit the new sitemap.xml to Google once your new site has gone live and you won't see too much of a drop.

I am migrating a website with some 750 static pages to silverstripe. Obviously I do not really want to rebuild each page manually.

Is there a method whereby I can create a php script to input the pages into silverstripe? I am happy to publish each page and move them to the correct place on the site tree manually but really want to bulk load them into the CMS.

Obviously i can present each page in whatever format is required

All suggestions gratefully received. BTW I am using Silverstripe 3.0.3

I have looked at previous posts and cannot see a similar question. Apologies if one exists!

Mike

setting urls on new silverstripe site

I wonder if anyone can help. We have a site in joomla which is now moving to silverstripe.

The issue is that we seem unable to replicate the urls in the new silverstripe site as nesting and flat urls don't achieve the goal.

The tricky part is that we want to replicate the current urls as they get very good seo status - whilst i know that 301s can be used the consensus seems to be that they have some affect on seo and we just cant risk that.

An example would be this page on current site - http://www.flyingkiwi.com/new-zealand-south-island-tour/. On new site it will still have 1 "parent" navigation items and if we use nested urls or flat urls it still inherists the parent item. Also on some pages on the current site we have 2 parent items but the url doesnt inherit either of these - again this doesnt seem possible in silverstripe.

also the current site uses a mixture of .html and / at the end of urls - can silverstripe replicate this as at present we only have / at the end?

if someone can help would be highly appreciated? Is there no kind of url override plug in as you get in joomla or wordpress?
thanks
neil

Hi,

Just figured out that the CustomModelAsController class from the book uses HTTPResponse instead of correct SS_HTTPResponse. Just modify this line and your redirects will work properly:

$response = new SS_HTTPResponse();

Ok, so I am completely unfamiliar with SilverStripe. The graphic designer working with it left and now I have to deal with it. The webpage was running perfectly, but then, out of the blue, it stopped working and is displaying a message stating "Sorry, there was a problem with handling your request. Visit www.silverstripe.org to download the CMS."

My computers had CMS, which strikes me as weird, and I dont have the least clue as to how to install if because I dont think the other person fallowed any of the online instructions.

Hello,

I'm migrating an old site from CMS Made Simple to Silverstripe. I installed SS on my local machine using MAMP.

I found some storage behavior. When I try to create a template, and put the html code from the old site in it, and restart mamp and the try to open the admin interface, I get a blank page that contains only the footer and no way to login.

If I remove the html code from the old site from the template, everything works normal again.

Could anybody help me? I'm new to Silverstripe. Many thanks!

This is what my Page.ss template looks like:

...
<body>
$Content

<% include Footer %>

</td>
</tr>
</table>

</body>
<script src="http://www.google-analytics.com/urchin.js" type="text/javascript">
</script>
<script type="text/javascript">
_uacct = "UA-194517-1";
urchinTracker();
</script>
</html>

Hi, I have an update on this... I've created an mySQL database and run the .sql script to build the tables/content etc. But I still have the issue where the standard install SS page is displayed not the files I copied in from the back up. The fiiles definitely exist in the myfiles/code folder, and all of the other files (assets folder, etc) are available within the cms (I've synched them).

I'm looking for any guidance on what could be preventing the site files in myfiles/code not to be displayed? I'm sure there is some configuration that I have not done, possibly with _config.php, .htaccess or ss_environment.php? And any other suggestions are most welcome.

Hi,

I'm trying to migrate a site from Linux to Windows... I've installed SS onto a windows 2008 server using the Web PI and with the clean install I can display the standard home page and can access the cms. However, I need to copy an existing SS implementation and msSQL database that was copied from a Linux machine. I've done as instructed on a number of forum threads and simply copied the mysite folder content as well as themes and assests folders across, however when I copy the _config.php file (in the myfiles folder) from the existing site (overwriting the newly created one) I get a 500 Internal Error - "HTTP Error 500 (Internal Server Error): An unexpected condition was encountered while the server was attempting to fulfill the request."

I guess it's something to do with the mySQL database because the db name, username and password are specified in the existing _config,php file from the Linux server, and I have a .sql file that was copied from the Linux server, but I don't know how to install/implement this on Windows. Can anyone give me step by step instructions on how to do this please? Or better still tell me what the cause of my problem is. Thanks in advance, as you can tell this is new to me...

Regards, Mark.

I've got a classes named 'Winkel', the class Winkel extends from Page, which extends from SiteTree.

The class 'Winkel' has a few custom fields like 'email address' and 'Winkel naam'. How can i make sure the silverstripe search engine also searches in my custom fields. I am clueless at the moment.

Thanks in advance.

(wrong forum, can anyone move it?)

Hi mattclegg,

YES, but the solution was very weird!

I had to manually convert the exported database dump:
iconv --from-code UTF-8 --to-code ms-ansi -c usr_web46_1.sql > ms-ansi.txt

Then I could import the file "ms-ansi.txt" using phpMyadmin on the new server.

No idea why this worked???

Best regards,
Volker

Ok, great, I have one more question. Our page "template" such as it is for the static site now, actually has three content sections: a main column, a "sidebar" to the left, and a section in the footer that all contain content that should be editable. However the CMS only has one content field for the page. I've been trying to follow some of the tutorials, but I think it's something trivial I'm missing. How do I add two more html content fields to the CMS for my page template?

EDIT: I found this. It worked for me: I just had to remember to visit "dev/build" on my site. It's all good now

>> how hard is it, say, to swap out the database backend on an existing site?

Not very hard: I'm assuming you mean in order to upload your site to a production server? In that case it's mostly a question of

- get a Database dump of your existing site,
- upload your website files to the server and make sure all rights are set correctly
- change your mysite/_config.php settings to connect to your new database(server)
- import the database dump you made earlier
- do a /dev/build?flush=1
to get everything to work

>> how fussy a process is upgrading a site to a new version of SilverStripe envisioned to be?

Normally that would be a question of replacing two directories: sapphire and cms for versions 2.4.x, framework and cms for versions 3.x.

Upgrading from 2.x to 3.x is a different matter - version 3.0 has had a major overhaul, so that would mean checking all your custom code and modules to make sure they are compatible... So my advice would be to start with version 3.0 if at all possible!

http://doc.silverstripe.org/framework/en/installation/upgrading

Thanks for the suggestions, folks. I have managed to get SilverStripe installed without too much ado on a rather unusual OpenBSD/Apache-1.3-fork/PostgreSQL/PHP stack for development, but when the site gets hosted, it'll probably go on one of those ubiquitous LAMP arrangements. I think I found just what I need here: Tutorial 1 - Building a Basic Site.

I don't have so much content that it's that big a concern to me at the moment, but how hard is it, say, to swap out the database backend on an existing site? And how fussy a process is upgrading a site to a new version of SilverStripe envisioned to be?

i have been using it now for several customers.
Implementation of most things is easy...
Now i say to the customer... if you can find word files in Windows from the file manager, can edit them in word... you can build and or edit your website.
Basic site as you mention i build within 1 day (mostly).

In the footer implementing a page is indeed as Plato said easy. make an page for instance in the cms... go to the properties of the page and say do not show in the menu... make an hardlink for it in the footer... so very easy

As he also sayd... all versions of the page are being kept... you can read it... restore it... etc.

From all CMS ive seen its very flexible and for the customer (or yourself) very easy and simple to add and edit pages.

This is the CMS for you.
Silverstripe does all of these things out of the box (with the exception of CMS editable disclaimer footers, but it's a 5 min job to add them in).

SilverStripe gives you complete creative freedom, your CSS can be as basic or as complex as you want it. The theme files are all separate from the site logic, so it's a very easy transition from static files.

Pages inside the CMS are managed in a very visual tree structure, easily adding heirarchial pages is not an issue.

Disclaimers on the footer are easy to put into a template. However if you don't want to edit the template every time they need updating, it is a very easy process to add a field into the site settings that will allow you to edit the footer from within the admin area. This job takes about 5 minutes, and you can basically copy most of the code from various sources on the internet, ask in this forum, or join the IRC channel for live help & guidance.

So far as I'm aware, SilverStripe is also the only CMS with a decent version tracking system built in. Not only can you restore previous versions of a page, but you can also restore deleted pages should you ever have the need.

I hope that helps you out. Try SilverStripe, it's worth it.

Migrating static site to SilverStripe

I would like to migrate my employer's website to SilverStripe. Right now it's a static site, and it's getting rather unwieldy to maintain and update content. I simplified things somewhat by writing a Perl script to generate the site from common templates, bits, and pieces, but it's getting to the point where I just want a real CMS. Here are a few things on my "want" list:

* Look and feel are very basic plain old CSS, and I'd just as soon leave it that way for the time being. We don't want to radically change this, or make it too fancy or complicated.

* We have a pretty basic "Home | About Us | This | That | The Other Thing" menu, but I need a way to make it hierarchical, because some of these categories will need to have sub-menus.

* We have certain required disclaimers that must appear at the bottom of every page on the site, and these must be subject to content management, as they must be updated from time to time and tracked.

* For regulatory reasons, all versions of the site we publish must be kept on file. An electronic database will satisfy this requirement.

I'd much appreciate any hints or ideas. Definitive solutions not needed at this point, unless it's something very simple and obvious I'm missing that will save me a lot of time. Thanks in advance.

Well, concluding from your answer it seems what I want to do is possible in SilverStripe. I wiil take the tutorials and then set up an environment this autumn. If I succeed in doing what I want, and Silverstripe is indeed userfriendly to the developer and maintainer of a site I will switch from Drupal to Silverstripe.

I think the best way to add general footer content is by using the SiteConfig (the general site settings). Say if you add a FooterText field to SiteConfig, you can then access that from your Page template using $SiteConfig.FooterText

This is for version 3.0: http://doc.silverstripe.org/framework/en/reference/siteconfig

Before you get started you may wish to do the tutorials. In SIlverStripe terms you may decide to setup a custom DataObject for your results or set them up as Page's with custom fields. Importing the CSV data can be done through the CSV Bulk loader class (http://doc.silverstripe.org/framework/en/howto/csv-import).

Hi,

I have build a website in Drupal. See www.vvwaspik.nl (it is Dutch). Now pages like in the menu's Programma (program), Standen (listings) and Uitslagen (Results of games) are uploaded records from csv files and published by a view (sort of queries on the database developed by using fields of the records). Getting to show the shirts of the teams means I use a relationship between the records of listings and records of shirts of teams.

Now I searched for an equivalent in SilverStripe to do this, I really can not tell if there is one. As you can imagine typing all this records by hand is not what I want to do.

Can anyone help me on this before I dive into SilverStripe. Please understand developing websites is not may daily work. But I managed to make the forementioned site with Drupal (thanks to lots of modules). I have some knowledge of html/css/sql/php.

Thanks for willing to answer my questions.

Hi Guys,

I have included a footer field in a HomePage page type. I require the information from this field to be included in the footer of all the page types, ie Page.ss, Article.ss etc. to ensure the user doesnt have to copy and paste the information. I know this is possible but I have forgotten how, any ideas?? I just need pointing in the right direction..

Cheers in advance

You can still call init(), works fine on my sites. Check you simply haven't got 2 of the same function pasted in the same file

Hi,

When I get PHP errors in my SS 3 install, I am only getting a generic 500 error instead of a custom SS error, despite having Director::set_environment_type("dev") set in my _config.php.

Also, why am I getting the following error:

PHP Fatal error: Cannot redeclare Page_Controller::init() in ...../mysite/code/Page.php on line 40

How can I get a chunk of PHP code to run when the page loads without init()?

Thanks,
Garrett

Do you have any specific questions? You'll have to setup the model, merge your existing database with the SilverStripe database and then SELECT the pages with all attributes INTO the SiteTree and related DataObject tables... probably you'll have to make some data conversions.

Hey guys,

I have a SilverStripe app and, alongside it, a different non-SilverStripe PHP app. I'd like to update parts of the non-SilverStripe app to check whether a user is logged in to the SilverStripe app and have it query for user information. How do I go about doing this?

Thanks,
Lee

Merging existing phpBB with SilverStripe - single authentication

Hi - for an upcoming project I'll be integrating a phpBB forum with SilverStripe.

I want to have a single authentication for both sites and wondered if anyone had any suggestions for going about doing this?

A few questions I have been considering:

Would it be better to use the phpBB members table and link this to SS or vice versa?

What authentication methods would you recommend?

Thanks - Peter

Re: Wordpress to silverstripe, possible?

One of the key points you need to consider is the content model. WordPress and SilverStripe have pretty different content models where WP pretty much splits everything into Posts and Pages. If your site is mostly page based then making the switch shouldn't be all that difficult.

The main thing to consider in that case is how you're using custom fields today. SilverStripe doesn't have the notion of custom fields at all but instead works with different page types. Each page type can have different fields and a different template from all the rest. So if you're using custom fields extensively you need to go through your site and note those down and then create them as page types in SilverStripe.

After you've done this you should be able to write an import script that takes the xml file you get from the WordPress exporter and imports it to SilverStripe. I'm not sure about the limitations of the exporter when it comes to custom fields so you might run into issues there.

If your WordPress site is mostly post based then a switch will be harder. SilverStripe doesn't really have the notion of non hierarchical posts like WordPress does. DataObjects don't have a hierarchy but they're really not meant to be displayed in the same way pages are. There is a blog module that you can use but converting posts over to SilverStripes blog module would likely take some work.

One other key point is that working with SilverStripe means writing PHP code, at least initially. Every content type in SilverStripe is a class so you have to get your fingers dirty. For simpler WordPress sites you can sometimes get away with writing very little PHP code if any but in SilverStripe you're going to have to write some. That said, SilverStripe is very powerful and once you get used to the workflow you can often do pretty big changes to the content model alot quicker than you can in WordPress.

Hi,

Im new to SilverStripe having been referred here by an industry colleague who recommended a change of platform. I have an existing Wordpress business website (Textile Industry) which i would like to transition to SS. In the past i would have outsourced any website work but after a couple of extremely dissapointing events recently i now want to take charge of all these matters in-house. My query revolves around the technical aspects of proposed transition.

What are some of the main key points i need to consider to effect the swap over?
_________________________________________________________________

custom t shirt printing
