Spam comments but can't view them online

I'm new to SS so am working my way through the various tutorials.
A while back, I set up a blog on my site. In a recent visit, I see that I have some 6,000 spam comments left via the admin/comments. These are marked as approved. However, when I go to the site itself, they are not there.
I have two questions:
1. Why are they not showing up on the site itself?
2. How can I automatically delete these in the admin/comments area?Thanks.

Also, depending on the version you're using, there may be a "Delete All" button in the Comments admin page, once you've selected Spam.
