First of all I think that the SS CMS is the easiest to install and use. I've tried every other CMS and they are cluttered and clunky but not slow. I have not found one I like, only SS.

Having looked around this forum I have to say that the most disappointing aspect of SS is the very slow performance. It would appear that as the site grows, the site slows. My site is in development as I write. There are only 11 pages, and many more to come, but the performance is terrible.

It's now 7pm UK time and my new page with nothing on it is taking 11 seconds to load. Once that page has loaded and I request any other page it's exactly the same. There's no way anyone will wait that long for a site to load. The back end is also dreadfully slow. My grandmother is quicker!

What I have also noticed is that since I have installed this on one of my UK based servers which is hosted at UK2.net, I am having issues with exceptionally slow server performance. I can check this in my WHM server status menus and the CPU load is over 30% and being flagged in red and memory usage has rocketed past 40%. Normally those figures are server load 6 - 15%, memory around 12 - 20%. I have had this server for over 12 months and NEVER had any issues at all. I have over 50 sites currently on this server, mostly e-commerce sites, and they were exceptionally quick. They have certainly slowed down since SS was installed. I have raised tickets with UK2.net and they have stated there are no issues. I believe them.

I have also loaded SS CMS on my other server which is hosted by a completely different company, Hosting Unlimited, and the performance on that is exactly the same.

As much as I had thought I had found the 'perfect' CMS I sadly have to state quite the opposite. It's grossly slow.

Well, for me it's back to the drawing board and SS will be binned. I can only say that I have spent 2 weeks with it but unfortunately with it's crap speed issues it's a non starter.

As you could have known there are plenty of people who work with Silverstripe on a daily basis and release sites that do NOT take 11 seconds to load.

Yes, Silverstripe needs a decent host and no, it will not break any performance records , but you are absolutely binning it for the wrong reasons.....

The fact that you've got a problem in your configuration , cannot be blamed on Silverstripe.

You can make it faster by following some of these tips.

Hi folks,

Thanks for your input and suggestions.

Over the last 4 days I have tried ALL suggestions and there is no improvement whatsoever. This has been tried on both my servers, both servers are UK hosted with no issues at all with any software or clients reporting issues.

SilverStripe is the ONLY software package with exceptionally slow (totally useless) performance. The only way it improves is by placing ?flush=1 in the browser but that only 'cures' the issue for no more than 15 minutes.

It is definitely not the hosting. I have loaded Joomla, Wordpress, CMSMS and numerous others over the last 4 days and page load times are virtually immediate. Those are all 'out of the box' performance's I am quoting.

In relation to Fuzz10's comments 'Yes, Silverstripe needs a decent host and no, it will not break any performance records , but you are absolutely binning it for the wrong reasons.....' you are correct, it defintely will not break any performance records AND may I ask why am I binning it for the wrong reasons? Page load times of over 8 seconds you would deem as acceptable I take it?

To be honest I like the interface and simplicity of the out of the box setup but to be honest with you all performance wise it's a total crock of sh*t. I can't waste anymore of my time with SS, but that's not to say in the furture I'm not going to check it out again.

Basically sort the performance issues out and it's a great CMS.

No, and if you browse through the showcase , you will notice that those sites do not have loading times of 8 secs. I just think you could take a more constructive approach and try to figure out why SS does not perform on YOUR particular setup.

I'm not really interested in other site load times to be honest. I have taken a very constructive approach and spent (wasted possibly or possibly not) many hours in trying/hoping that the page load times can be sorted. I need to be able to develop the site, not start sorting issues out for days and days on end.

I can see that you may think that there is a host issue, but if that were the case why haven't over 350 individual clients who host their sites on our 2 servers ever had any performance loading issues? Bearing in mind that both servers are hosted by very reputable companies here in the UK. I have also read online that there are many people who have tried SS and the only let down is performance.

What I don't expect to have to start doing is spend a half day or even longer changing scripts and lines of code and files JUST to get the page load times to something acceptable. I'm obviously aware that some packages need a slight tweaking here and there, but none of them I have ever used just to get the performance to somethig acceptable.

So, if anyone has any other possible tweaks for improving the page load times in my SS installation I am more than willing to try them.

For the time being it's back to the drawing board.

For interests sake, have you tried out installing 2.4 to see if that improves speeds at all? Its not released yet, but the alpha is there. Would be interesting if this fixes anything of what you are seeing.

I encountered some slow SilverStripe performance on a hoster where "Zend Optimizer" wasn't enabled. Not sure if that was the issue though, since we moved the Site to another host which performed just fine (and had "Zend Optimizer" too).
