File and Images Updating an image with Assoication to other DataObjects

I have a problem, maybe I have looked at for too long and the answer is staring me in the face. We have setup a very large site with 100's of images associated in 100's of locations. How is it possible to upload a new image to replace an existing image (with the same file name) and not lose its associations. (I.E. not get a new ID) To avoid us having to re-associate the file with dataObjects.
