2.4 - Using Tokens or Custom Tags in Content

I read in the blog posting for version 2.4 that there is now an "Improved API to allow custom tags to be parsed within CMS content before being presented on webpages."
Anyone have any information on how to utilize this improved API? - as I have been using the recipe that has been out on the wiki up to now - would love to know how to officially do this using the API now.
