Published 401 and 403 pages are blank on prod server, other error pages and dev server OK

My Error Pages of type 401 and 403 are published as empty files of 0 bytes. Seems very strange because...
* 404 and 500 work, and I've modified them to check it still works
* All error pages work fine on my local machine with an identical setup of Silverstripe 2.4.4
* If I edit the error-40x files manually and re publish the pages they revert to empty documentsSilverStripe seems to have write access so I don't know what is going on here. It is such as strange one that I'm almost expecting it to just go away by itself...
Any pointers?

I am experiencing the same issue on 3.0.5.
Anyone know why?
