Premature end of script headers: main.php

Hello -- I have a very strange problem and have no idea where to even start looking further. I am running SS v. 2.4.5 on Apache 2, PHP 5.2.11 with suPhp.
The page works if I am logged in, or if I append ?stage=live
If I am not logged in, or I don't include ?stage=live, I get a generic "Server error" and in the Apache log it says "Premature end of script headers: main.php"
Any ideas or pointers?
