How does 'search' work?

I noticed that some search results are not complete. For example I search for 'ABC' and three pages are shown, but two are missing. Both pages are checked to show in menu, show in search, are not hidden or only for special user groups.
I am wondering how the search function works. I can't find good points about it. Where can I look for some further information about search?
