Currency field symbol change to £

Okay so what is going on? I am NOT running the eccommerce module but am using a currencyfield using the dataobjectmanager which is fine. But I want to change $ dollar symbol to the £ pound symbol. I have added this to the config file Currency::setCurrencySymbol('£'); I have changed and hardcoded the currency.php in sapphire to &apound; But it still appearing as a dollar aaaahhhhhh any little help would be apprieciated. I have googled this but nothing has cropped up.

Have you used a basic ModelAdmin approach? Does this only appear with DataObjectManager? If so please ask in that area of the forum...
