File add_extension onBeforeWrite

Hi
Im trying to apply an on before write to File but it appears it does not get called when i upload a file, I've put some logger messages into both my extension and into File.php onBeforeWrite and it appears that neither of these methods get called.
Has any any experience on doing something like this or what the cause could be?
