File isn't a Valid Upload - I've heard that one before!
Please see here for options depending on your version of silverstripe...

Thank you so much for responding to my request for help~ I waited a week for an answer, for someone to help me with a faulty install and inability to upload files or images to cms, and had to abandon that question, delete it and start again with just one question at a time.. duh.
I uploaded small jpgs to my website upload folder via ftp and then logged online into admin of cms and still the cms cannot find any files in that folder, as if they never existed. Therefore your suggested link to that other thread did not resolve my problem. if there are permissions to add somewhere can someone please tell me where, or offer a direct answer to the problem of why I cannot upload any files. I am not a programmer so I need fairly simple answers. Have other people not encountered this before?
I wasnt even able to install the wamp onto my local host. it stopped install half way through and I could not get any further, before permissions could get added. I could not get past the pop up: "Do you want to allow the following program from an unknown publisher to make changes to this computer?" My computer did not acknowledge anything past that popup, it just closed, and localhost page is blank. Is this the reason why my online cms is not working either? Is this a really hard question?
I am at the stage where I shall soon have to abandon silverstripe because it is not possible to get answers to simple installation questions, nor simple things like adding files, - via this forum....I only got referral to another thread, which did not resolve question.
So, the only thing I can think of, is to pay someone to answer my questions. Is there anyone prepared to help me with my install problems, or any other issues that crop up regarding changing themes etc.
I will need to know how to install/use silverstripe for my future projects, I currently have 3 website customers waiting for me to get silverstripe installed, so they can get a cms into action.

You should be using the cms file upload to upload files. From the description of your problem with this it sounds like there is something wrong with the server that is not allowing that to work. Would you like to attach the file you are trying to upload here and create a temporary guest log in for the cms?
If you do upload the files through ftp into the assets folder, the CMS will not see these files unless you sync them. Go to the following link on your site to sync the files you have uploaded:

I'm telling you how to sync the files after uploading using ftp. Just go to this link:
For the admin you only need to go to this link, not that it really makes a difference:
I tried uploading a file through the CMS and got the same error. The strangest thing is there is error feedback through firebug in the background. This is not normal. I have never seen this before so I cannot help anymore with this problem. It looks like either a server settings problem or an install problem.
I have found some forum posts on this topic that may be helpful:
If you're going to be developing Silverstripe sites for people you really need to know how to use the CMS and probably how to build sites using this CMS.
I advise you to install something like xampp on your computer, install silverstripe locally, learn how to use the cms as a user, and then learn how to develop for the CMS.

thanks for all those suggestions. I think I will uninstall the faulty cms off my website for a start. but first perhaps delete my wamp stack off my localhost, since that didnt install properly either. Then I could install xamp that you recommend, then the silverstripe locally. Actually, if there was someone that could tell me why wampstack didnt finish installing, then that would be great, because I am always wondering if that was due to not locating my mozilla firefox exe file, - the wamp found explorer.exe instead by default, and I went with that. Does anyone know if this is the reason why it didnt install properly? Anyway I have since located my mozilla, in a folder called "Program Files (x86)" and I didnt know it was in there, I had only looked in my "Program Files" Folder... So if I download xamp will it also look for explorer, and I change it to the mozilla? Is that correct, otherwise I might get the same problems over again. does anyone know what I am talking about?

When installing xampp simply run the install exe that you download. It should not have anything to do with firefox or mozilla or explorer. I recommend installing it into C:\xampp\ to avoid directory issues.
