completely custom GD image manipulation

Hi
I've read about the GD function in silverstgripe to do some image manipulation - however, I want to create a script that does a few other things. Actually, i'm hoping to crop images to a circle PNG with alpha surrounding the image.there is some GD code here (http://stackoverflow.com/questions/9880503/crop-image-in-circle-php) but i just dont see how to put custom GD code into SS...
Any ideas?
