$Content.FirstParagraph and images

Hi guys,
I've been using the .FirstParagraph method to extract a 'teaser' for news stories, but if there is an image in or before the first paragraph, it displays what appears to be the alt text in it's place like this: * some image *.
Is there any way of getting it to either display the image or hide it completely?
