Server uses huge amount of CPU/RAM - Slow/Sometimes crashes

i have a very large site, huge assets folder (1gb.. images & files), multilanguage: site is in 6 languages, database (25mb export to SQL), 1800 pages, 300 per language..
the problem:
Windows Apache server uses HUGE amounts of CPU/ RAM .. When visiting a page, every page, the CPU goes sky high. The server crashes when too many ppl are visitingWhat could be the cause?
I dont get errors in my log, i do get a few, but they dont look related to the crash of the server
Could it be that the assets are too big?
Using SS 2.4.7 w/ different modules: blog, queuedjobs, lucenesearch, smtpmailer, InivisbleSpamProtection, dataobject_manager, uploadify, userforms,spamprotection, memberprofiles
