could not add image content or get .swf content to work

as part of adding content via the Silverstripe cms, i could not add image content even after uploading the desired file into the /assets/ uploads folder.. nothing happens after i click insert image =(
as for flash .swf file, i could add it in - displays the 'f' symbol, but after saving and publishing my page.. the main published webpage displays nothing. =|
any help? thanks =)
