Email: Using populateTemplate with Plain Text

Working from the docs:
http://doc.silverstripe.com/doku.php?id=emailIs it possible to use populateTemplate when sending an email as plaintext?
I've tried and get an empty body every time. I haven't deciphered the code yet, but if anyone knows the answer it would be helpful (with a code example for bonus points!)
