Current status of search component

Hello everybody,
in version 2.3 the search component only allows to search for data which is contained in one of SiteTree's properties. By my understanding that does exclude properties of classes that extend SiteTree. Is that right?
What is the roadmap concerning this? Will there every be some kind of search comprising also child classes from SiteTree? -

I'd like to add a + 1 to this subject.
I've been tearing my hair out for the past couple of days trying to get search to include a custom field on the page class.
