Continuing from the previous forum installation...

Dark horse asked...

Hi Gareth.

Please can you help.

I think I'm suffering similar problems to you attempting to install SilverStripe on a Fasthosts Linux server. (150mb MySQL for Linux DB)

Would it be possible to ask how you managed to solve your problem.

Below are the Requirements I'm failing on:

1. Is the .htaccess file writeable?
User 'domain???' needs to be able to write to this file:
.htaccess

2. Server software
I can't tell what webserver you are running.
Without Apache I can't tell if mod_rewrite is enabled.

3. mod_rewrite enabled
I can't tell whether mod_rewrite is running.
You may need to configure a rewriting rule yourself.

Any help would be very much appreciated.

Thanks in advance, DH.

Dark horse,

Regarding the .htaccess issue, if you haven't already, you need to create a file in the root of the web directory called .htaccess, and then set the priveledges on that file to writeable (i usually set to 777). That'll solve that!

Regarding the mod_rewrite. That module is installed, but fasthosts have done something weird, so you should be able to go through and install from there.

Let me know if that works / doesn't.

This sounds like the problem I have; I use a reseller of Fasthosts.

Was a solution found to this?

Many thanks

I used to use Fasthosts, but had loads of problems getting mod_rewrite working. Their phone support told me that it was because I hadn't registered my domain name with fasthosts (which, quite frankly, is a load of crap). Since they got bought out by 1 and 1 they have become a horrible company with shite service!

In the end I just gave up, switched provider and no longer use them.

If this is a possibility I would recommend switching to another provider. I use 34sp (http://www.34sp.com/), They give you Apache, mod_rewrite and even mod_python and ROR support.

Hi Mo, do you still recommend 34sp? Are they based in the UK?

Cheers

Hi Taffy,

For Silverstripe its a difficult question. I have had some problems getting 2.4 running on their shared host accounts, but after spending some tgime in conversation with their tech support managed to get most of my issues fixed (I still have trouble uploading on one account, but that may be something I have done).

Generally I would say, if you are willing to put up with having to debug your install to match their shared host settings, or are going to have a virtual server, then they are a good price and give you a lot of features. Plus I find their level of support is very high.

Sorry if its not a resounding "do it", but I would like to be as accurate so you can make an informed decision :).

PS: They are based in Manchester.

Did anyone manage to find a solution to this issue?

My client insisted on sourcing their own hosting, so moving hosts isn't an option for me.

I've been trawling the net for ages, and there are workarounds available for Joomla and Drupal on Fasthosts, but I don't know if there's any way to modify them for SilverStripe.

Thanks
