Are there any webhosts where Silverstripe mod_rewrite works with no hassle?

I'm trying to install Silverstripe on Bluehost, but like so many others, am getting the "You need mod_rewrite to use friendly URLs with SilverStripe, but it is not enabled." error on the installation page. I have been assured by Bluehost that it is enabled. I have been trying to get this to work for the past 3 days and, don't trust the recommended hosts list now. Has anyone successfully installed Silverstripe on their first try with any webhost?

Thanks,
Junior

Have you tried simply ignoring the warning and seeing if it works? The installer check could be incorrect for the host. Only shared host have used is dreamhost and it worked fine.

If you are considering running SilverStripe on a large website I recommend using a VPS or better so you can run SilverStripe optimally.

I also have serious troubles getting some SilverStripe sites up and running.
Now I'm thinking about getting a hosting provider which is specialized in hosting SS sites : https://my.a2hosting.com/
Before having again some kind of dissappointment concerning the service provided, is there a provider
known by you guys delivering an optimal environment for SS applic ?

if you look near the bottom of the stable download page it looks like silverstripe recommends arvixe. i've never tried them, and dont know your localization preferences, but that seems to be who they vouch for.

As will_r mentioned, VPS is much better but obviously not $4 /month. also, if you come across any plans that offer a plesk system, you may want to avoid them..

Hi Chris,

I don't get your last phrase : "...any plans that offer a plesk system, avoid them...". Why should I avoid shared hosting with a plesk control panel ?

Plesk has the ability to introduce extra issues like open_basedir.
Nothing that you can't get around, but you need to patch the core to do so. Not optimal.

I've never run into mod_rewrite troubles before.
The system should still work without it though, but every page will have index.php in front of the path.
