Error creating folders

Hi, I'm having trouble in Asset Admin creating folders...it gives an error message:
500 Warning: "chmod() [<a href='function.chmod'>function.chmod</a>]: Operation not permitted" at line 597 of /usr/local/www/vhosts/eastland.co.nz/httpdocs/cms/code/AssetAdmin.phpany ideas how to solved this....??
I've checked permissions on my assets folder and changed to 777, but still no joy -

A quick google will reveal a couple solutions or discussions around it (its more a PHP / permission issue that SS specific) eg http://codeigniter.com/forums/viewthread/74152/
