ah ok I think I understand the process now and what it means to be 'not on disc'.

There is no file there that I can view, open, edit etc. using FTP

But every time Google looks for the sitemap.xml one is created automatically.

    Sound right?

So would you recommend deleting the old sitemap.xml and sitemap.xml.gz files currently on the server and leaving it all to the magic invisible sitemap?

    Correct

The sitemap.xml file generated by SilverStripe, will make a sitemap of all pages in CMS - but not of any static pages you may have.
So if all sites are in the CMS, go ahead and remove the other sitemap files - keep a backup in case it's not working as you expected

    Amazing stuff.

Thanks so much for all your help.

If anyone else who views the topic is a little worried about deleting their old sitemap.xml file - don't be ;). You can always check and see the sitemap.xml file that silverstripe creates by going to http://yourdomain.com/sitemap.xml (as noted by Thomas) or viewing it through Google webmaster tools.

    Thanks again.
