Thanks for your suggestion. It turned out that the problem was that code had been inserted into the php files when they were uploaded to the web server. The code appeared to be related to the ftp program I was using. The product is goftp and there were specific references to this product within the installation script which I had to remove. I found this in second php file as well and had to clean this up as well. Once this was done the install ran OK.
