creating new page type causes admin environment to disappear

I'm following the first tutorial, using silverstripe 2.3.1, on a Mac, in MAMP. when i get to the creating-a-new-page-type section, everything goes well until i rebuild the database. it looks like it doesn't create the database records, just the database tables, and when i refresh the cms admin page, everything in page content and files & images disappears.
any ideas? i'm pretty unskilled with these things, but i don't think i did anything weird when i installed.

Ha! Never mind. I had a space in <?php. FYI - that doesn't work very well.
