Here's a site template I am looking at getting. I want to know what challenges there will be in converting it to SS. This is especially in regard to the flash content, such as the menu system.

http://osc.template-help.com/wt_28115/index.html
http://www.templatehelp.com/preset/pr_preview.php?pr_code=1xev5TjpVNkkW5fh38p138QwsdG513&i=28115&tab=32

I started using silver-stripe a year or so ago with a similar template and I recall there was a problem where I could not get the flash menu to cooperate with the SS logic, so that the menu shows which page is selected and that kind of thing. Instead, every time you changed page the whole menu would reload from scratch with the wrong menu items selected.

The other annoyance I recall was that I could not get the rotating banner to choose its images from an outside source - say an SS folder. This would allow me to change the banners regularly using the SS interface rather than having to rewrite the whole swf.

So firstly, is it possible to seamlessly integrate this site into an SS site? And secondly, would a (guided) person with only moderate HTML and basic flash skills be able to do it, or will I need a professional?

Hi,

If you want to know the challenges there will be when converting a template into SilverStripe then just give it a go yourself. I suggest start with a basic, non flash template (especially if you haven't created a template before) that looks similar to what you want and then go from there.

Regarding the flash template, it all depends if they provide the full flash files with the template, but I would first get the non flash website working, then ask the developers on the IRC channel if they have any tips as to how to edit the flash files so they will bring in SilverStripe objects.

Mike.
