Reviewing SilverStripe.org

Posted by Brian Boyko on 18 June 2010

We want to find out what features you'd like to see implemented, (or what problems royally annoy you), on the SilverStripe.org site.

Recently, SilverStripe Ltd did a reconstruction of the SilverStripe.com site. Part of it was that we wanted something splashy to go with launching Dawn, but we also wanted to migrate our own .com site to SilverStripe CMS 2.4. Since we were upgrading the backend, we figured we might as well work on improving the public facing portions too. Sorta like, "Gee, Doc, so long as I'm going to have to have surgery for my appendix anyway, can you work in a tummy tuck while I'm under?"

Of course, SilverStripe.org is much more complex than SilverStripe.com. It's not just a site - it's a portal for the development community and repository of information.  Because there's more work involved, (and more worst-case scenario bits that could go wrong), we haven't yet upgraded SilverStripe.org from 2.3. However, it's not much of a surprise to say that .org will also receive a 2.4 upgrade in the near future.

In addition to the features we'll improve simply by jumping to 2.4, we've got a few things to do on our to-do list. We want to improve our anti-spam capabilities and improve our search. But, before we dive into the project, we would like to find out if there are any key features that you'd like to see added to SilverStripe.org.

What's the one thing you would change? Anything is up for discussion - features, annoying bugs, content, layout, colour scheme, or whatever. (The only thing we ask is that you keep comments about documentation over at the recent blog post on improving documentation.) We're really keen to know how we can make it a more useful tool for our community.

Once again, we thank all of you for your help.

  • Thanks everyone for all of your feedback! You've given us a lot of information and it's all really valuable to us.

Most of the feedback totally aligns with what we were thinking. We'd already begun work to improve the search function on the website so we are pleased that several of you have asked for that.

  • When my programmers first suggested we use SilverStripe I googled, and was confused at the difference between silverstripe.com and silverstripe.org – I was looking for a CMS but found a web company, it took me a while, perhaps this could all be a bit more obvious?

  • So glad to hear the search is on the list! It's nice to have search out of the box, but it'd be even nicer if it were a good search.

  • I thinking an idiots guide to upgrading for those who only do maintenance of their own site and cannot understan the book very well

  • I think the showcase could be improved with a search and maybe user ratings system, to really show of some great stuff people are doing with SilverStripe, before it gets lost on a deeper page.

  • I think a larger (visual) integration of all the .org sites would be great. Now api, open, forums etc are now totally different and you really have to search (with Google for best results...) for it or get pointed to it that certain pages or docs even exist.

And please use the wonderfull Partial Caching to speed up the sites. Cause they sloooooowwww... Not really a representation of Silverstripe. Personal I like Joomla's Extension Directory for modules and templates with all its posiblities.

A search function for the IRC Logs would be cool too, because there is a lot of good information and solutions discussed.

The main point what I want to make is, that IMHO all the information is spread and hidden, and Google seams the best way to access it.

    Hope this helps.
    Thanks

  • great if we had

    - ecommerce in 2.4
    - seperate field handling of form elements in a template (label, input, etc.)
    - search over search results
    - page comments with two groups (loged in user and anonymous) so the "anonymous" comments won't be posted before they are checked, or so
    - automatic autocomplete in forms (either the suggestions will be handled in the cma or automaticly with a search or so)
    - suggestion module... people who have read this were interested also in .... also for the ecommerce module interesting
    - css3 and html5

you are a great team - thanks for all the work and sharing!!!!

  • Helpful Sources / Links of Silverstripe

I love silverstripe - the only thing which i think is not so good is the documentation and access to further extensions. it feels a bit too much spread out.

Here are some helpful links i am using at these times:

  • An index for modules and widgets would be great. At present you have to go through page after page or guess at the name to search.

    Thanks.

  • A preview option for forum thread creation and replies would be spectacular.
