Signup 'thank you' on homepage

Hello,
I'm hoping there might be a simple answer to this question: I'd like to have my newsletter signup form redirect users to the homepage and a small 'thank you' div pop up as I'd rather not redirect people to a dedicated 'thank you' page. I've got the redirect fine but i'm struggling to figure out how to make a part of the template dependent on this redirection.
any ideas?

I usually make the redirect to say home/thanks/ then you can make a HomePage_thanks.ss template in your project with the thanks information or you could use session values to store newsletter signup status.
