I suggest the following:

• - download and extract the theme (i.e. Vista) into the themes subdirectory. Change _config.php to use this theme and check it is working.
  
• - copy the entire theme directory to a new theme directory with them of your choice (i.e. MyTheme)
  
• - change _config.php to use MyTheme and check that it is working (All links in MyTheme will still point to Vista, but that is ok)
  
• - edit all css and ss files in MyTheme to point to MyTheme directories and no longer to Vista and retest
  

This way, you have the original Vista theme always at hand to check and compare.

I use notepad++ (http://notepad-plus.sourceforge.net/uk/site.htm), a very nice source code editor. For testing I use Firefox with Firebug and IE-tab as Add-on, so that I can see the html and css structures and switch between IE and FF on a mouse click. For graphics I use Xara.

Take care that the trasfer tool is uploading files correctly. If you work on a Windows PC and upload to a Linux server, you better transfer css and ss files as text(ascii) then as binary. (Unix and Windows use different line end characters, but modern ftp clients know how to handle this)
