Upgrading 2.4.0 -> 2.4.5 redirect issues

I have several sites under
/var/www/and they each point their sapphire, cms, googlesitemap directories to the installation under
/var/local/apps/silverstripe
/var/local/apps/silverstripe actually points to /var/local/apps/silverstripe-v2.4.0
and everything works swell.
As soon as i point /var/local/apps/silverstipe to /var/local/apps/SilverStripe-v2.4.5 I end up with 500 errors due to too many redirects and don't get a chance to run dev/build?flush=1
is there something screwy in the new .htaccess of 2.4.5 that's relying on something else to be set?

today i tried a fresh install of 2.4.5 on my server without any links or tricky paths and the installer said I need to to turn magic_quotes_gpc Off in php.ini as it can cause issues with cookies.
So at least now I have 1 site running 2.4.5 on my live server and the 4 other sites on 2.4.0
