admin/assets fails - trying to get property of non-object

Trying to open 'Files & images' fails with an error:
[Notice] Trying to get property of non-object
GET /admin/assets/
Line 432 in /Users/macbookbruce/silverstripe/sapphire/filesystem/Folder.phpIts possible this is triggered by replacing/adding images directly into the assets folder instead of going through the CMS but this was OK in 2.2.3.

This happens on my local machine as well as my live site. Is there a log file somewhere that will give me more info? eg The name of the non-object?

It now works again after editing one of the sapphire files. Have I fixed a bug? Bypassed something significant that will bite me later? Who knows! See ticket #3664 for more details:
