We recently invited the SilverStripe community to come together for a long overdue meetup in Auckland.

This was the first time in over a year that the City of Sails has hosted a SilverStripe Meetup, and we were delighted that so many people came along. We welcomed the usual crowd plus several new faces, which really demonstrates that the community is growing.

Great audience notwithstanding, the meetup’s highlight was our two presentations by SilverStripe developers Maxime Rainville and Aaron Carlino.

Maxime on upgrading to SS4

Maxime recently joined SilverStripe’s Auckland office, having worked previously for digital agencies in both Dunedin and Auckland building client solutions with SilverStripe.

In his presentation, Maxime focuses on the ins and outs of upgrading to SilverStripe 4 (you can view Maxime’s slides here). As many of you in our wider community are either about to upgrade, or midst-upgrading, this will no doubt be valuable information.

He kicks off talking about the magic upgrader tool and how it can help with automation during an upgrade, and also provides useful insight into upgrading manually. He then goes into namespaces and APIs, and how they’re making SilverStripe 4 an even better product.

Aaron on GraphQL & React

The second presentation came from the world famous Aaron (alias Uncle Cheese) in which he showcased how GraphQL and React are working within SilverStripe 4 (you can view Aaron’s slides here).

As he’s spent the better part of the past 12 months incorporating these two newer technologies into SilverStripe, Aaron was very eager to share his work with the community, and he's looking forward to seeing both technologies increasingly involved in projects using SilverStripe.

What’s on the horizon?

Christchurch hosts the next SilverStripe Meetup, Wednesday 1st August (see details), followed by Auckland on Wednesday 19th September (details TBC).

We’re aiming to get up to speed with more frequent meetups, primarily in New Zealand’s big-three: Auckland, Christchurch, and Wellington.

For those of you who are geographically challenged – by popular demand – we’re also working towards more regularly streaming meetups. We’ll keep you up to date with progress in this space. In the meantime: Follow SilverStripe on Crowdcast.io
