the mod_rewrite installation issue

Greatly excited by the promises of Silverstripe and really keen to try it out - but having the old mod_rewrite issue that seems to be very common in this forum.

What is the latest thinking on this? It would be great if there was a page that listed all the things to try, a troubleshooting page for this topic - as there seems to be a lot of people besides me having this issue. Can someone point me in the direction of the latest thoughts on this issue

I've installed it on my mac running OS X 10.3.9 and for the life of me have tried every solution i can find in the forums - disabling E_NOTICE, editing user.conf, along with the obvious stuff - all to no avail.
