I'm having a terrible time getting what should be simple things working in SS. Books, docs, examples, tutorials and code versions all seems out of sync and Im progressing way too slowly.

Is there any way to get paid support from SS or some or a EU based guru to help unstick me?

There are various companies in the uk that provide this - even I have been known to help people out every now and again :o

Your best bet is the developer network and review their profile on the forum / IRC.
