Custom error page 410

I have successful custom error pages for 404 and 500, but I seem to be having difficulty in creating a custom 410. When I redirect using Apache: Redirect 410 "/content-is-deleted" the custom error page created through Silverstripe does not appear. The server message appears instead with this message:

410 Gone

The requested resource is no longer available at the server and no forwarding address is known.

Has anyone seen anything like this? Does anyone have any suggestions as to how to implement a custom 410 page?
