is there a way off controlling the HtmlEditorField height

You can set the number of rows in the constructor of your htmleditor field - http://api.silverstripe.org/forms/fields-formattedinput/HtmlEditorField.html#__construct. As long as you don't have a height in your CSS file this should be able to effect it... Or you can use CSS to configure the height.
