Logging out too soon

Hi, I'm not sure if it is a SilverStripe issue or a Forum issue. I'm working in 3.6 and am having a problem of being logged out too soon when a customer is idle. With the nature of my website, often a customer can be reading or watching a video that renders the computer as idle and logs them out. Where can this time be increased, say to an hour? Can someone point me in the right direction?

Hybrid Forum + Listserv functionality

Hi all - we're working with a client that is looking for a solution to provide listserv and forum capabilities combined in the same experience. Some examples of this include the way that Basecamp or Teamwork handle messaging, where you can initiate forum threads but also select individual recipients to receive an email notification as well based on group permissions or other role/group factors.

There are open source solutions outside of the SilverStripe and PHP world like GroupServer. However, it would be a bigger pain to integrate those with a SilverStripe site than to extend the forum module.

My questions:
1. Has anyone encountered or developer a solution like this that would be interested in collaborating on this project and extending the existing forum module in the process?
2. If the answer to #1 is yes, can you share a link or get in touch so that I could review what you've developed to be sure its a fit for this project?

Getting Started

I have successfully installed the module forum. However, I can't seem to figure out how to embed it in the pages. It created a forum in my site tree and I have been able to create categories and add users through the SS admin. When I open the pages they display the default messages.
I haven't been able to find any documentation. I'm obviously overlooking something very simple and important.

Hi Raton,

I highly suggest installing composer (https://docs.silverstripe.org/en/3.2/getting_started/composer/) rather than trying to install addons manually.
The addons will often require other plugins/addons in order to work, so when you try to install manually you will need to grab these other requirements manually too.
Composer will grab all the requirements for you and install into the correct folders. Then you just simple run "/dev/build?flush=1" and away you go.

The google analytics code can be done with an addon (see link below):

lightbox:
You will need to create a folder for Javascript or use the existing Javascript folder, I usually have one under my theme folder.
Then just put the javascript code for the lightbox in your Javascript folder and then implement it in your template with a require.
(E.g. <% require javascript("Path/to/javascript.js") %>)

Templates:
You will need to set your tmplate within the settings tab of the CMS, but before doing any of that simply try a "/dev/build?flush=1" on your domain.

Module problems

Hi, I'm new with silverstripe and I have a few questions about it.

1- I would like to know how to add a module to silverstripe.. Every modules that i found need requirements and I don't find any links to start dowloading them. For exemple, I would like to add a social media button to share my articles on my Web site.
2- I would like to add google analytics to track my website and I don't find where to add the code in the _config.php folder of the CMS folder.
3- I would like to add a lightbox for my images.
4- I would like to change the template or to add a new one. I've put them in the template folder but it doesn't work so far.

I've watch lots of videos and read a lot about those things and I still have no clue how to do this so far..

Hey, I just got this working!

After posting to this thread last year, I finally decided to give it a shot today, and it was dead easy!

Here's my process:
1. Copied the sample script from the BBCode example on the TinyMCE website and pasted at the top of the template files Forum_editpost.ss, Forum_reply.ss and Forum_starttopic.ss (or as an Include)
2. Updated the tiny_mce.js source location to framework/thirdparty/tinymce/tiny_mce.js
2. Changed the mode to "textareas" in the script.

And bingo - it works! Can happily format text, add links and images, etc with no probs.

Can someone much more clued-up than me please check this and let me know if there are any security issues or other problems with what I've done?

Edit:
Have hit a glitch with the validation when replying to a post. It seems the validation is being parsed before the TinyMCE editor renders the content into BBcode or some such thing, so it thinks the "Content" field is empty. My nasty solution is to remove the validation but it seems to allow all "Content" fields to be left empty, not just ones on reply. Approx line 822 of Forum.php:

$required = $addMode === true ? new RequiredFields("Title", "Content") : new RequiredFields(/*"Content"*/);// --- Second "Content" validation instance commented out to make compatible with TinyMCE plugin. ---

A better solution would be appreciated.
Edit:
I've made a few other tweaks to improve this implementation:
1. Removed the styleselect item from the theme_advanced_buttons1 line of the script as this functionality is only supported by the PunBB dialect.
2. Added the following text to Forum_BBCodeHint.ss: Note: Some BB Code tags are not available from the tool bar. To manually add other BB Code tags to your content, click the HMTL button in the toolbar first.

Before, I host at asphostportal.com, I can setup globalization settings in the web.config in order to change the UICulture to en-US. For example:

Judging purely by the variable names used, you probably want <% with ... %> rather than <% loop ... %>

I believe the tutorial you were using was out of date.
Do you have the .ss file to look at too?

I think you will find that the .ss file is using <% control %> rather than <% loop %>.

I'm re-using an old form from the SilverStripe tutorial in the latest version (3.1) but am getting an intermittent error.

[User Deprecated] SSTemplateParser->ClosedBlock_Handle_Control is deprecated. is deprecated. Use or instead. Called from SSTemplateParser->ClosedBlock__finalise.

Just updating this post for anyone who finds it. Here's an approach that uses an extension hook to allow you to promt a password change on the fly at the time the member logs in.

class CustomMember extends DataExtension {
   public function beforeMemberLoggedIn() {
      $promptToChangePassword = // Do some custom validation
      if ($promptToChangePassword) $this->owner->PasswordExpiry = '1999-01-01';
   }
}

Apply the extension to Member and members you target should be redirected to Security/changepassword after logging in. Note that as per the built in functionality this doesn't force members to change their password, it just encourages them to do it.

URL linking opening in same window

Just a general question about the short codes, should links open in new windows rather than the same in a post? i.e.:

[ url=http://test.com ]my link[ /url ]

I added spaces so the short code doesn't get picked up...

Haven't use the module a whole lot so not sure how the short codes are handled. More of a question I thought of while answering questions in the SS forums, not my own forum instance.

How to theme the forum

Hello,

I have installed Silverstripe and I'm in the process of creating a custom theme for it, however the forum module seems to malfunction with it as it's giving me a placeholder instead of the actual forums?

To display the page content the theme simply does the following:

<h2>$Title</h2>
$Content

The Simple (default) theme, showing the forum as it should.

My custom theme, showing the forums as if no page has been created yet.

Is there any documentation on how to theme the forums?

This probably sounds silly to most of you, probably being a LOT more experienced with computers than me, but I was wondering if anyone could give me a link or post how to install a forum module on Debian, baby step at a time. Validation error when posting replies

When I try to post a reply to a forum topic (which uses PostMessageForm), a validation error is shown for the "Title" field that says:

"Title" is required

However, Title is a readonly field (and is not actually a field, but just a <span>).

Any ideas what could be causing this? I'm trying to reply to a topic I created, if that changes anything.

The search works now (without the full text search module) on the forum holder out of the box. while there is the search bar included in the forum template, too, it doesn't seem to work. i am currently researching this issue and it seems the allowed action and search function is not implemented in the controller.

Have you tried a flush as the SilverStripe templates are cached and need to be flushed when they are updated.
See the info from [ur]http://doc.silverstripe.org/framework/en/tutorials/1-building-a-basic-site

Flushing the cache

Whenever we edit a template file, we need to append ?flush=1 onto the end of the URL, e.g. http://localhost/your_site_name/?flush=1. SilverStripe stores template files in a cache for quicker load times. Whenever there are changes to the template, we must flush the cache in order for the changes to take effect.

Also it is always good to include the code you are using in the post so we can see if there is anything wrong.
Using something like http://www.sspaste.com/ is always good

newsletter template is not shown

hi I'm badly unfamiliar to silverstripe.
I copied the newsletter.ss which I found in "mysite/templates/email" and I saved it as newsletter-august.ss. I just added a special image. But apart from this it is identic to the newsletter.ss.
If I coose it in my new newlsetter-type and I make a new draft and klick on "Preview this newsletter" - nothing is shown!!

Can anybody tell me, what I forgot?
Or what I did wrong?
That what I understood to do from the documentation.

You should also note that "suscribe" and "unsuscribe" buttons here on these forums are not working.

Moreover, if you click accidentally 'delete' the post will be deleted. The javascript that should show the modal dialog box asking for confirmation about delete post, has an incorrect selector.

When an user receives a notification about a new post, there is an "unsubscribe" link which has 2 errors:

1. The param is PostID instead of ThreadID (you subscribe to threads, not posts)
2. The unsuscribe method is designed t be called via AJAX, so it doesnt show any friendly message saying that the user has been unsubscribed.

Good to hear, so your problem is now resolved?

I note that you original problem also involved the MemberProfile module, note that as yet the MemberProfile and Fourm module don't work together, but that is something that we would like to see happen in the future.
