If I understand correctly, the tab you navigate to in the CMS is the tab that will appear on the next page you go to edit. This makes a lot of sense and is cool.

HOWEVER! I'd like my new HomePage page type to default to the widgets tab, as that's the only real point of the home page. It's just a bunch of widgets. Does that make sense and is it possible to change the default tab to appear in the CMS?

EDIT: I've realised what I want could be achieved by simply hiding the Main, (and Meta data and Site map) tabs. Am I barking up totally the wrong tree?

You can always use

removeFieldFromTab() to remove any unnecessary fields http://silverstripe.org/archive/show/1610
