alternatives for the widget system

Has anyone created any alternatives for the widgets (as soon in blog) system. I am about to implement widgets, but I am wondering if there are any better systems out there. Is there any reason we should not use widgets (e.g. they will be obsolete in 3.0)?

They are a separate module as of 3.0 so won't be out of the box.
