Yes, that does seem to be the simplest way to achieve this.
When you say create a Section tag do you mean to do this in the same way the tutorial does with adding an author to the articlepage?

Yep exactly, using the $db and getCMSFields to add a field to the page in the CMS which you can then populate with the pages uppermost parents URLSegment
