I got a similar problem.

The error message was:

[User Error] Uncaught Zend_Cache_Exception: cache_dir is not writable
GET /login/admin?flush

Line 208 in /[...]/sapphire/thirdparty/Zend/Cache.php

[...]

# Zend_Cache::throwException(cache_dir is not writable)
Line 156 of File.php
# Zend_Cache_Backend_File->setCacheDir(/tmp/,)
Line 122 of File.php

I fixed it with this line in my _config:

// workaround to get ZF cache in the right folder
$_ENV['TMPDIR'] = dirname(__FILE__)."/../silverstripe-cache";
