SilverStripe Branding Guidelines
SilverStripe Limited, along with other contributors to the project, provides open source tools that they make available under the BSD licence (the Software). This means you are welcome to set up a business based on this Software and sell your expertise and code provided you comply with the terms of the BSD licence.
SilverStripe Limited owns the rights in the SilverStripe name and logo. The BSD license, under which anyone is able to use the Software, does not cover the use of the SilverStripe name and logo. In order to use the SilverStripe name or logo, you need a licence from SilverStripe Limited. SilverStripe Limited grants any person a licence to use the SilverStripe name and logo under and in accordance with these guidelines if they meet the criteria set out below (Who can use the SilverStripe name and logo). For any other use, you must enter into a written agreement with SilverStripe Limited. We’ve developed these guidelines to help protect the SilverStripe name and logo for both our company and the wider community. This will help prevent misuse and confusion for those seeking out official SilverStripe resources.
Why is this important?
Working together will help SilverStripe to become a strong, cohesive international brand.
This benefits the whole community by strengthening SilverStripe’s reputation, which can help grow our own businesses.
If we don't control how our brand is used, it can be difficult to stop people from misusing it and causing confusion in the market.
Who can use the SilverStripe name and logo?
SilverStripe Limited allows the following persons to use the SilverStripe name and logo in accordance with these guidelines:
SilverStripe partners: SilverStripe partners, who have entered into a SilverStripe Partner Programme Agreement with SilverStripe Limited or any other party authorised by SilverStripe Limited can use the SilverStripe name and logo in accordance with that Agreement.
Other businesses: Business who are not SilverStripe partners, but who use the Software, are permitted to use the SilverStripe name and logo in relation to their services or products in accordance with these guidelines. However, they cannot use the SilverStripe name and logo in the business's brand or name or the brand of name of the service or the product that uses the Software.
For example, a business could say:
"Our module lets you integrate your marketing automation software seamlessly with SilverStripe CMS. "
"Our SilverStripe module lets you integrate marketing automation software into your site."
Or a business could say:
"Our booking software is built with SilverStripe CMS to offer an intuitive content editing experience."
"Our SilverStripe software lets you manage online bookings."
Non-profit community projects: You may use the SilverStripe name and logo in accordance with these guidelines if you are running a non-profit community project that meet the following criteria:
- the primary purpose of your project is to promote the spread and improvement of the Software; and
- your project is nonprofit in nature (it can make money to cover its costs or contribute to non-profit entities, but it cannot be run as a for-profit project or as part of or to promote a business or businesses).
An example that meets this criteria is:
- SilverStripe Christchurch Meetup - community-run developer meetup (uses the SilverStripe name in branding)
If you are not sure whether you meet the criteria set out above, and therefore whether you are able to use the SilverStripe name and logo, we suggest you contact us before using the SilverStripe name and logo.
If you want to use the SilverStripe name and logo and you do not meet the criteria set out above, you will need to enter into a written licence agreement with SilverStripe Limited before you use the SilverStripe name or logo.
How can I use the SilverStripe name and logo?
If you are entitled to use the SilverStripe name and logo because you meet the criteria in the previous section, you must follow a couple of golden rules:
- Name: You may not use, or register or apply to register, the word ‘SilverStripe’ in your business, event, product, service or domain name or in any trademark or brand.
- Logo: The same goes for the logo. If you create a logo for your business or any product or service, you cannot use the exact look and feel of the SilverStripe logo and brand or a confusingly similar look and feel.
The following examples comply with our brand guidelines as they do not contain the word “SilverStripe”:
We understand that some people have registered domain names including SilverStripe before we had this policy online. This was done without a licence from SilverStripe Limited, and we will be contacting the owners of these domains to work out a path forward.
The SilverStripe logo
If you are permitted to use the SilverStripe logo under these guidelines, the logo must only be used in accordance with SilverStripe Limited's Logo Usage Guidelines, which you can find here.
The key points in the brand guidelines are:
There should be sufficient clear space around the logo.
The logo should not be redrawn—use the artwork provided by SilverStripe Limited.
The colour of the logo should not be changed. We have formats suitable for dark and light backgrounds.
The proportions of the logo should not be skewed. We have both square and wide formats available.
Updates to these guidelines
SilverStripe Limited may update these guidelines from time to time. If SilverStripe Limited changes these guidelines, it will post the current version of the guidelines on its website, and that version will apply to all use of the SilverStripe name or logo from the date that version is posted on the website.
Trademark Usage Policy

We may grant permission to use the SilverStripe name and logo for projects that meets the following criteria:
- The primary purpose of your project is to promote the spread and improvement of SilverStripe open source software.
- Your project is non-commercial in nature (it can make money to cover its costs or contribute to non-profit entities, but it cannot be run as a for-profit project or business).
Usage of the SilverStripe name
SilverStripe-related businesses or projects can use the SilverStripe name and logo to refer to and explain their services, but they cannot use them as part of a product, project, service, domain, or company name and they cannot use them in any way that suggests an affiliation with or endorsement by SilverStripe open source project. However, “silver” or “stripe” are not covered by SilverStripe trademarks and approval of their usage is not required.
The SilverStripe Logo
The logo is an established device. Wherever possible the spirit of these guidelines should be adhered to. There should be sufficient clear space around the logo. The logo should not be redrawn and may only be originated from electronic artwork downloaded from this page.
For mono colour material then 100% strength of the colour is used e.g. if the production is black then 100% black. “Create the web” is the official tagline of both SilverStripe limited and SilverStripe the product (CMS and Framework), and should be used in favour of the logos without the tagline where possible.
