Staged folders and assets/files

Is there an easy way to force staging (draft/live) onto folders and files within the CMS? Can I set up a "MyFolder" and "MyFile" class and do inheritance and adjust the conf file to activate it? I would like to avoid adding a plugin to handle this, if possible.

It's support for that is not built into core. Why are you trying to avoid adding a plugin? because there is a module available - http://www.silverstripe.org/versioned-files-module/.
