I created a new theme called "custom".

I left "blackcandy" in-tack. Now I cannot login to the website administrative area because the template and css have been customized for the public website and don't support the admin area.

How can I set a different theme for logging in the the admin area?

Your theme shouldn't effect the admin area at all.

So once you log in, what do you see? (error message?? blank screen?? incorrect layout?? or just can't log in??)

One thing that might have happened is now you have a different name for main content so you are not loading $Content and $Form which is needed to display the form to log into the admin section. If you include these in a standerd page then the username/password form can be displayed and u can log in.
