How can I test the value of $Heading within a controller?

From Special.ss

<h1>$Heading</h1>

From Special.php

class Special_Controller extends Page_Controller {
	function special () {
	 if ($Heading=='Hello')
	}
}

this should work:

function special () {
     if ($this->Heading=='Hello')
}
