When Map Coffee became aware that their existing CMS was going end of life, they approached Sydney-based Silverstripe Professional Partner, UnDigital to rebuild their eCommerce website on Silverstripe CMS. Below, we hear all about the project, including how UnDigital were able to seamlessly transition their client to a new store.

Project background

Map Coffee, part of the Tata Global Beverages family (including Tetley, Tea Pigs, and Good Earth Kombucha) approached Silverstripe Professional Partner, UnDigital with a great challenge. Their old website was built in Magento 1 and they had been made aware that their existing CMS was going end of life. On top of that, the existing site was expensive to maintain and their hosting bill was worth more than the value the site was giving them.

The most interesting challenge in this project was not only to rebuilding Magento functionality in Silverstripe CMS, but doing so seamlessly, with no interruption to the client's current back of house workflow. This involved creating a phased release strategy to design, develop, and deploy key functionality so it could be tested and iterated before the next phase was ready to launch.

Rebuilding Map Coffee on Silverstripe CMS

UnDigital created a five phased project plan to re-design, re-develop, and replace the existing CMS with a Silverstripe CMS 4 build. There was a carefully crafted UX strategy that informed the key pieces of the puzzle and how they would all fit together. Each phase of the project removed a piece of functionality from Magento and moved it across to Silverstripe CMS.

The first few phases of the project were to create an online presence for the commercial side of the business. UnDigital created an array of content modules using Elemental Blocks so that landing pages could be created, and then have customers fill in a cost calculator form for lead generation.

The final phases of this project involved a complete online store rebuild including a Coffee Club login area for member special pricing, inventory management, coupons, order rules (some products can only be ordered in certain batch quantities), recurring payment module (so customers can order regular coffee deliveries), and a custom fulfilment module.

The fulfilment module takes a successful order, generates a correctly formatted CSV file, and sends the CSV file to the warehouse. Once the order is received at the warehouse, it’s automatically ingested into Map Coffee’s system, printed, picked, packed, and delivered to the customer.

UnDigital also created a series of notification emails to keep customers up to date with their order progress and provide them with tracking information. Additionally, a repository was created with shared backend resources, to generate cost efficiencies or other brands in the group who wish to create their own shop. This saw UnDigital produce another Silverstripe CMS powered eCommerce store for Tata’s Kombucha brand, Good Earth.

Delivering a secure and performant website with no interruption

The results so far have been excellent and the new store very well received by the client. Finally, they have a functioning webstore that fulfils all their requirements, without the resource hunger associated with the old website or potential security issues resulting from out of date software.

The transition was smooth from the old site to the new, and the fulfilment team were able to continue using their back of house processes to successfully fulfil and deliver customer orders. Map Coffee’s monthly hosting bill has also significantly reduced, they’ve achieved a marked increase in Google rankings, and the site has received praise from users.

UnDigital and Map Coffee are now focusing on optimising the platform to increase conversions and traffic, rather than spending time managing and installing patches to keep the old site up to date.

Silverstripe CMS modules used on this project

UnDigital utilised a number of Silverstripe modules to achieve the desired functionality and outcomes for Map Coffee.
